If Left Untreated
If left untreated, an enlarging prostate can continue to grow over time, potentially leading to serious health problems.
In very severe cases, the prostate becomes so large that it completely blocks the flow of urine from the bladder. This conditionknown as acute urinary retention (AUR)is a medical emergency. Patients with acute urinary retention must have a catheter inserted through the penis into the bladder to relieve pressure and restart the flow of urine. In some cases, surgery may also be needed.
In rare cases, an untreated enlarged prostate may eventually lead to:
- Urination that you can't control (incontinence)
- Urinary stones
- Kidney damage
- Bladder infection
- Surgery
Without the right treatment, things can get worse. The latest treatment options may help avoid the need for surgery. Talk to your doctor about any symptoms you may be experiencing that you think might indicate a prostate problem such as enlarging prostate.
