Here is information on three types of prostate surgery:
Transurethral Surgery
As the most common type of surgery for Enlarging Prostate, transurethral surgery is performed without ever cutting the skin. After the patient is given anesthesia, the surgeon reaches the prostate through the penis. The surgeon then removes any prostate tissue that is causing symptoms.
Laser Surgery
During this type of procedure, the surgeon passes a laser fiber through the urethra into the prostate gland using a cystoscope. The surgeon then delivers several bursts of energy lasting 30 to 60 seconds. The laser energy destroys tissue and shrinks the prostate.
Open Surgery (Prostatectomy)
In the some cases, open surgery requiring a cut may be used. This is done when the prostate is greatly enlarged or when there are other problems. Using general or spinal anesthesia, the surgeon will make an incision through the abdomen or perineal area to reach the prostate, and remove it.
