Medicines
There are two types of prescription drugs available to treat the symptoms of Enlarging Prostate. The first type are called 5ARIs (5-alpha-reductase inhibitors). 5ARIs reduce the level of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes the prostate gland to enlarge.
5ARIs for Prostate Treatment:
- Shrink the prostate over time
- Improve long-term urinary symptoms
- Reduce the risk of AUR (acute urinary retention)
- Reduce the need for prostate surgery
The second type of prescription drugs used for enlarged prostate are called alpha blockers. Also called alpha-adrenergic antagonists, alpha blockers relax smooth muscle cells and help improve urine flow in men with prostate problems.
Alpha blockers for Prostate Treatment:
- Relax the muscle of the bladder to rapidly improve urine flow
- Reduce uncomfortable symptoms
- Do not shrink the prostate or reduce the risk of AUR or surgery on your prostate
